Every cloud has a silver lining. News broke Thursday that the World Junior Hockey Tournament will not be co-hosted in Erie, however one of Erie’s other tournament bids did work out. The 2016 Junior Connect 4 Tournament will now be filling that void. “We’re incredibly excited to bring this event to Erie,” one of the event coordinators said. “This is our biggest year yet and it’s going to be a boon for Erie’s economy. We’re excited to fill the Downtown Erie Hotel’s conference room on 18th and State with some of the tri-state area’s most enthusiastic Connect Four fans.” Participants in the event range from ages 10 to 14 and is growing quickly in popularity. The tournament has doubled in size, just in the last year alone, to 14 contestants. “It’s really been an explosive year of growth,” the coordinator said. “When you factor in the 14 families and the handful of fans that come to watch, we’re talking upwards of 30 hotel rooms here. So, yeah, it’s a pretty big deal.” The winner of the tournament receives a 15% off coupon for one admittance to Splash Lagoon.
